Dragon Copilot note updates are bringing more context to eligible Epic workflows and a closer fit for psychology and psychiatry documentation. Microsoft’s announcement covers improvements to note generation across Dragon Copilot and DAX Copilot in the United States.
For healthcare teams, the practical question is what will look different when you review your next draft note. Here is a guide to the changes, where they apply, and how to assess them in your own workflow.
Epic workflows
More relevant HPI documentation for eligible Epic users
For Dragon Copilot customers using Epic with Diagnosis retrieval enabled, visit diagnoses can now inform the history of present illness, or HPI. Microsoft says this helps the note give appropriate attention to relevant clinical details, medication information, and dates, while keeping unrelated conditions summarized.
This capability has a specific prerequisite: the Epic workflow must have Diagnosis retrieval enabled. It should not be assumed to apply to every Dragon Copilot environment or every DAX Copilot user.
For an eligible practice, a useful follow-up is to review whether the HPI gives the visit’s main concerns the right emphasis. If the output does not match expectations, start by confirming the workflow and configuration with your support team.
Psychology
Psychology notes that better reflect therapy sessions
The psychology update is designed to give the substance of talk therapy more prominence throughout the note. Microsoft also describes stronger mental status examination documentation within the physical examination section.
The assessment and plan is being expanded to represent more of the encounter: the issues discussed, therapeutic work and interventions, next steps in treatment, relevant observations, risk considerations, and documented time.
For psychology teams, the value to evaluate is whether the draft better reflects the session you conducted. Review how interventions and follow-up plans are represented, and identify any recurring edits that would benefit from workflow coaching.
Psychiatry
A revised structure for psychiatry documentation
Psychiatry notes are also receiving organizational changes. Within the HPI, functional status, triggers and stressors, and family psychiatric history will no longer appear as individual sections. A family history section is being introduced.
A change in headings can affect familiar review habits. Before concluding that information has disappeared, review the complete draft and its new organization. Continue checking that the encounter’s relevant history, assessment, and plan are accurately represented.
Do you need to install or activate anything?
Microsoft says these note-generation updates are applied automatically, with no action required. The announcement identifies the United States as the applicable region and lists Dragon Copilot and DAX Copilot across web, desktop, mobile, embedded, and Epic offerings. The Epic prerequisite described above still applies to context-aware HPI.
This announcement does not establish availability in Canada or other regions. It also does not describe an upgrade requirement or a need to purchase a separate service to receive the update.

A practical review for your team
Although installation is automatic, a brief workflow review can help your team understand the output changes:
- Orient users to the differences. Let psychology and psychiatry clinicians know which sections may look different.
- Compare the draft with the encounter. Check that the relevant history, therapy content, interventions, and follow-up plans are represented appropriately.
- Look for repeated corrections. Patterns in editing can help your support team understand where additional guidance is needed.
- Keep clinician review in the workflow. Updated generation does not replace reviewing and correcting a note before it is finalized.
